Millard retains lawyer for murder trial in father’s death; trial moved to April

Convicted killer Dellen Millard won’t be representing himself at the first-degree murder trial for the death of his father.
Wayne Millard was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the eye in his Etobicoke home on November 2012 — just months after Laura Babcock was murdered.
His death was deemed a suicide until Millard was arrested for the murder of Tim Bosma and the investigation was re-opened.
This month, Matthew Ward-Jackson was sentenced to 11 years for selling Millard the revolver that was used to cause the death of his father.
At a pre-trial hearing on Monday, Millard retained lawyer Ravin Pillay to defend him at the eight-week trial in Toronto. The trial was supposed to be held on March 20, but is now expected to start on April 3.
Pillay was a part of Millard’s defence team in the Bosma murder trial , which resulted in a conviction for first-degree murder. Millard and Mark Smich were sentenced to life with no parole for 25 years.
Millard and Smich were also convicted last month of murdering Babcock who went missing in July of 2012. A sentencing hearing is scheduled on Feb. 12. The Crown will be seeking a consecutive sentence of 50 years for killing Babcock and cremating her body in the same incinerator as Tim Bosma. Victim impact statements will also be read by Babcock’s family and friends.
